Nikkei Youth Sports, Arts, & Culture Bursary Recipients Announced at Nikkei Matsuri 2025

The Nikkei Youth Sports, Arts, & Culture Bursary celebrates exceptional Japanese Canadian young leaders making a difference in their communities, providing essential assistance to pursue their goals. This year’s 2024-25 recipients were announced at the Nikkei Matsuri, giving festival-goers the chance to share in the excitement. We are proud to congratulate Xauni de Figueiroa and Isabel Geiger!

Xauni is now in her first year at the University of British Columbia. She is an award-winning ceramic artist whose work reflects her Japanese Canadian heritage. She is also a competitive dancer and swimmer, and a passionate leader in sustainability and inclusion. Xauni co-founded a bee-friendly environmental project, led her high school’s Green Team, and volunteers at cultural and community events.

Isabel is a standout student-athlete at Queen’s University. She is a two-time Ontario University Athletics Rowing All-Star, Rookie of the Year, and a multiple gold medalist in lightweight pair and 8+ events. Beyond competition, Isabel mentors and coaches young rowers, promotes diversity and inclusion in sport, and founded the Kitsilano Care Club, which connects students with isolated seniors.

Congratulations once again to Xauni and Isabel - their passion inspires us all! We look forward to seeing all the amazing contributions they will continue to make in the years ahead.

Keep an eye out for the next Bursary application intake opening in Spring 2026!
